Squadron Leader Mel Annis

Sports Officer

Sqn Ldr Annis has a long RAF Air Cadets history, having joined 2156 (Brierley Hill) Squadron Air Training Corps in 1990, first serving as a cadet. Her next step was as a Civilian Instruction, then she took her journey to become an Adult Warrant Officer then commissioned into the RAF VR(T) in January 2000, transferring to 223 Halesowen Squadron ATC for the next five years.

In 2018, after a break in service to bring up her two sons, Sqn Ldr Annis took up post at 156 (Kidderminster Sqn ) as their Training Officer. In January 2020, she was appointed as the West Mercian Wing ATC Deputy Sports Officer, taking over as the West Mercian Wing Sports Officer in April 2020.

Said Sqn Ldr Annis: “Sport has always been a huge part of my life, representing my school in netball, athletics, cross country and numerous representations with the ATC as a cadet. I am a member of my local athletics club where I train with the road runners group where I have competed for the club in the Midlands Cross Country League, a UKA field official and the club’s Lead Welfare Officer. I love being outdoors and have a number of adventure training qualifications. I particularly enjoy skiing, hiking, indoor climbing and competing in agility with my working cocker spaniel”

Sqn Ldr Annis will continue her role as a member of the West Mercian Wing Shotgun Shooting Development Team, as well as being a supernumerary officer at 156 (Kidderminster) & 451 (Stourbridge) Squadrons delivering First Aid, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Adventure Training.

In addition to all of her volunteer work, Sqn Ldr Annis has also been a Paramedic for the last 28 years with West Midlands Ambulance Service. At the moment, she works in the 999 Control Centre as part of the Clinical Validation Team and is also a Clinical Pathways Tutor, Mentor and Auditor.
